Social networking websites like Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn are gaining popularity day by day and other Internet strongholds like Google, Yahoo, and Microsoft had tried to grab their share of social networking traffic without much success to date. Although Google has done a pretty good job by launching Google Plus after a number of failures.

Among others, Facebook is one of the popular social network website at the current time. Some use it for one purpose and others for more than one purposes. Here are the list of things Facebook can be effectively used in our life:

In Twitter, you can create your personal or business brand and virtually dominate your market, simply by building a list of followers. Profile Page

Once you’ve set up your Twitter account you can quickly customize the look and feel of your profile page. You should pay close attention to your one-line-bio. This one-line-bio is what people will read before they decide whether or not to follow you. You only have 160 characters to describe who you are and what you do. You might need to think a lot about it to make it good.

Adding a photo of yourself or the logo of your business helps a lot. A photo of yourself is better when dealing with customers as they feel like talking with a human.

Some Nepali users of micro blogging platform Twitter have started a weekly debate to discuss on a specific issue, related to Nepal. The first virtual meeting conducted on March 18, 2011 decided to conduct the debate on every Friday from 10 PM to 12 AM.

Anybody can participate in the virtual debate. To make the participation easier, one of the organizers has created an illustrated how to page in the debate site.

The topic for March 25, 2011 is titled "Civil Vigilance- how can we do it?" The aim of the debate, according to the website, is:

use social media to form a citizen pressure group
use the group to push for gradual improvements in social/political issues
start an open-source style political campaign
Pragmatic solutions to problems, not complaints

Tweeting for Cause Nepal (tfcNepal) is another social networking group. With a fund of NRs 4000, collected from its founding members, the group is planning to collect 20 paisa (Nepali rupees) per tweet from its followers.

The fund will be used to support old age homes, orphanage homes, street children, government Schools, and libraries.

We wish @tfcNepal a success in their mission: ‘if we are able to bring smile on every faces through our tweets’.

I was excited to watch a music video in YouTube. When I opened it up, the screen turned green. I could listen to the sound but the video won’t appear. Here is the explanation on how I solved the problem.

Q. How can I tell if someone is following me on Twitter without checking in the "Followers" list?

You can see who your followers are how many of them are following you are given in your profile. But, if you want to check is an individual is following you or not, go to that person’s page. And see if it has a "Message" button.

A message button will be there if the person is following you, as you can direct message them. Otherwise the person is not following you.

The following two screenshots are from pages of two persons I follow in Twitter. The first has reciprocated my following and has followed me back. So, I can send a message to the follower.

QR Code – language for mobile?

A QR Code is a specific matrix barcode (or two-dimensional code), readable by dedicated QR barcode readers and camera phones. The code consists of black modules arranged in a square pattern on a white background. The information encoded can be text, URL or other data.

Common in Japan, where it was created by Toyota subsidiary Denso-Wave in 1994, the QR code is one of the most popular types of two-dimensional barcodes. QR is the abbreviation for Quick Response, as the creator intended the code to allow its contents to be decoded at high speed.

My mobile phone reads a short text instantly. It took a little while to read the long text. In contrast to the bar code, that can contain up to 20 characters, this small square can contain up to 7,089 characters.

"xnepali.com" looks like the code posted on the right. The difference between the densities of the dots in the two codes is clear to indicate how long the text it contains.
