  • HDTV – LCD vs. Plasma vs. LED

Posted on April 22nd, 2012 No comments

Shopping for a HDTV is not easy these days. After huge an bulky CRTs have become dead, the main three variants of HDTV in the market are LCD TV, Plasma TV and LED TV. Although there is a huge difference between CCFL-backlit LCD, LED-backlit LCD and Plasma technology, the question on which technology is best has remained unanswered.

    tv_comparision_led_plasma_lcd_hdtv

Early days – plasma technology offered the best picture quality and was the market dominant technology in flatpanel HDTV. But, later after the introduction of thinner and energy-efficient LCDs became less expensive, they started to increase it’s market share. In the recent time, LED-based LCD flat-panel HDTVs have become an ideal choice for it’s lower energy footprint. But, the technology is relatively costly.

    Plasma LCD LED
No backlighting (image creating phosphors light up themselves) Backlight (liquid crystal screen doesn’t light up) Edgelighting (LEDs at edge)
No separate light cold cathode fluorescent lights (CCFLs) to illuminate the screen light emitting diodes (LEDs) to illuminate the screen
Least expensive (tendency) Intermediate cost Costliest
    thick   thinnest
Picture quality good Picture quality good Excellent picture quality
Require more power medium power lowest power requirement

Yes, LED-based LCD is the best flat-panel HDTV technology available. But, it is costly. Let’s compare these three technologies.

  • New iPad initial reviews

    Posted on March 15th, 2012 2 comments

The new iPad is being released in 10 countries including US, Canada, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Australia, Japan, Singapore, Switzerland and UK on March 16th.

Early iPad reviews by various critics seem to agree on the main feature of the flagship product of Apple. As expected, the reviews are positive in every aspect.

    ipad3

The reviewers agree on the awesomeness of the new ‘Retina display’, 4G LTE, improved camera and speedy graphics. Let’s summarize the main points of reviews:

    • The Retina Display is top-notch : iPad’s resolution is higher than any HDTV available in the market – at 2048×1536 pixels. The reviewers assure that the display looks great and they didn’t forget to mention that the users should see the device to believe it as no TV or computer screens can replicate the pixel density.
    • The device is similar to iPad 2: Yes, it’s the same size (except for a slightly thicker and weightier body) that can fit into iPad2 cases. It looks same and the processor is the same dual core A5 as in iPad2 except for a beefed up 4 core graphic processor.
    • 4G LTE is fast!: The reviewers found that the 4G LTE network connection is very fast. But, the network is not universal. It is only available in US and Canada, that too in a few cities. Although users might not be able to benefit from the facility now, it is a good thing to have a network that can potentially be faster than the home network.
    • Camera is great: iPad2′s camera was the worst possible camera in a portable device. Although nobody would feel comfortable taking photo with a 10 inch device, it takes great photos. The reviewers were specially impressed by HD video recording capability.
    • Good price: Although there are different tablets costlier and cheaper than iPad, iPad so far is the best tablet device. When compared to other competitive tablets, iPad’s features justifies the price.

  • How to delete a Facebook message and unarchive archived message?

    Posted on March 15th, 2012 1 comment

One of our readers had asked how one can delete a Facebook message.

    Q. I had sent a hate message in Facebook to a girl last year. When I tried deleting it, I can only found "Archive" option and clicked on it. Now, I wonder if the message is deleted or not. Is "archive" same as "delete" in Facebook? (S.S.)

    A. No, archiving a message doesn’t delete it. It is saved and you can always get it back. You can archive a message easily but it is not same as deleting and archived message is always there in your profile. Let me first talk about how to archiving and unarchive a message.

    Archiving Facebook Message

In the message-list window you can see a ‘x’ at the end of each message. If you click on it, the message is removed from the message-list. But, it is not deleted, so you can get it back if you like. To ‘unarchive’ the archived message click on eyeglass icon beside "Search Message". As shown in figure below:

    facebook_messages_archive_delete

When you click on the icon, it expands to show you a menu as shown in figure below. Click on "Archived Message" to see all the messages you had archived before. You can read them or unarchive to bring back to the message-list.

  • iPad 3 logic board leaked

Posted on February 19th, 2012 No comments

Chinese site WeiPhone posted a photo claiming to be the logic board of iPad 3 showing an "A5X" written on the chip. The forum post indicates that the new processor in upcoming iPad won’t be A6 processor as rumored. Although the image can be of a test model or a prototype, the date code says "1146" – meaning the processor was manufactured in the 46th week of 2011, i.e. third week of November.

Now, it is also uncertain whether it will be called an iPad 3 or an iPad 2S or something like that. Let’s compare the iPad 2 logic board. The following image from iFixit website shows iPad 2 logic board with A5 processor on board. Comparing the two, it is clear that the new logic board is much more compact with less empty space in it.
